The Capeland Collection

The Capeland from Baume and Mercier has been reimagined for 2020. Still drawing its inspiration from the ’40s and 50’s in particular but with a much more modern and dynamic feel. Compared to some of its predecessors, the 10451 and 10452 Capeland are now offered in a slightly smaller 42mm case diameter with a thickness of just over 13mm. The case is produced from stainless steel that has been blasted to give a matte finish, then coated with ADLC – amorphous diamond-like carbon – which gives a contemporary aesthetic while providing a silky smooth feel but more importantly protecting the case with an almost un-scratchable surface which is also more resistant to greasy fingerprint marking.

The matte black dial is clean and uncomplicated while being perfectly functional for a chronograph. Depending on which reference you opt for, sub-dials are either black or silver with a machined finish. To avoid confusion between normal timekeeping, Baume and Mercier have taken the step to depict the sweeping second and minute sub-dial hand of the chrono function, in orange. The hour markers are superluminova filled trapezoidal plots highlighted by Rhodium plated edges with the 12 o’clock marker the following suit but in the shape of the brand’s logo; the Phi symbol. Delicate, well-proportioned leaf style hands indicate the time, also infilled with superluminova. To assist with accurate timing, there is a well defined second track at the outer edge of the dial, just inside of which an orange ring adds a sporty feel and brings all the components together. A bevelled date window at 6 o’clock offers a clear white font on a black background.

Atop the case sits a sapphire crystal, slightly domed which prevents reflection and protects the dial, housed in either polished steel or ADLC coated bezel to match with the rest of the case. Two polished domed pushers operate the chronograph function of the ever-reliable ETA 2894-2 movement which offers a 42-hour power reserve, a sturdy, signed winding crown allows manual winding and setting. The case back is a highly polished engraved ring style held secure with six screws with a central sapphire crystal through which the Baume and Mercier decorated movement can be admired.

A black calfskin leather strap, debossed with a ‘carbon fibre’ style design adds to the sporting feel of the new Capeland, with the rubberised orange leather of the underside complementing the highlights on the dial. Easily adjusted, the strap is secured on the wrist with Baume and Mercier’s tri-fold clasp with a signed buckle.
